Protect the relationship, not just the margin

Scope changes are normal. A short written change order prevents different memories of what changed, why the schedule moved, and which price was approved.

This template is a practical starting point, not legal, tax, accounting, employment, or insurance advice. Have locally qualified professionals review terms that carry material risk.

Frequently asked questions

Do small changes need a change order?

Use judgment, but record any change that affects price, deadline, quality level, workload, or acceptance. A concise email referencing the change-order fields may be enough when your agreement allows it.

Should work stop until approval?

Your agreement should say. For material changes, pausing affected work is usually safer than creating unapproved cost or missing the original delivery without warning.
